Industrial Biotechnology is technology that utilizes biological systems, living organisms or parts of this to develop or create different products. Today, it covers many different disciplines (eg. genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, etc.). PaleBlue is developing its own platform for process modeling and simulation in biotechnology. Everything is covered: from products addressing medicine (development of new medicines and therapies), agriculture (development of genetically modified plants, biofuels, biological treatment) to industrial biotechnology (production of chemicals, paper, textiles, and food).

PaleBlue has seen how biotechnology is already changing traditional industries such as food processing and fermentation. It has also given rise to the development of a whole new way to industrially produce hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals, get new food and energy sources and new ways of processing waste materials. This field must be staffed with trained bio-technologists who not only have a sound basis of biological knowledge, but a thorough grounding in engineering methods. In medicine, PaleBlue is developing simulation software for biotechnology in areas such as pharmaceutical drug discoveries and production, pharma-cogenenomics (study on how the genome effects the drug response), and genetic testing (or genetic screening). PaleBlue has seen how Biotechnology has contributed to the discovery and manufacturing of traditional small molecule pharmaceutical drugs as well as drugs that are the product of biotechnology – biopharmaceutics.

PaleBlue has developed tools for modern modeling and simulation in biotechnology that can be used to manufacture existing medicines relatively easily and cheaply. Also, Genetic testing allows the genetic diagnosis of vulnerabilities to inherited diseases, and can also be used to determine a child's parentage (genetic mother and father) or in general a person's ancestry.

Genetically modified crops (sometimes referred to as "GM crops" or Biotechnology crops) are plants used in agriculture, the DNA of which has been modified with genetic engineering techniques. PaleBlue has observed that in most cases, the main aim is to introduce a new trait that does not occur naturally in the species.

Genetically modified foods (also called GM foods) are produced from organisms that have had specific changes introduced into their DNA through genetic engineering. These techniques have allowed for the introduction of new crop traits as well as a far greater control (helped by PaleBlues tools) over a food's genetic structure than previously afforded by methods such as selective breeding.

Industrial biotechnology (sometimes referred to as “white biotechnology”) is the application of biotechnology for industrial purposes, including industrial fermentation. PaleBlue’s process simulation solutions allow practicing with cells, (like microorganisms), or components of cells (like enzymes), to generate industrially useful products. The areas of applicability range from sectors such as chemicals, food and feed, detergents, to paper and pulp, textiles and biofuels.

In the recent years, significant progress has been done in creating genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This only enhances the diversity of applications and economical viability of industrial biotechnology using PaleBlue’s VR solutions. By using renewable raw materials to produce a variety of chemicals and fuels, industrial biotechnology is actively advancing towards lowering greenhouse gas emissions and moving away from a petrochemical-based economy.

PaleBlue has seen both the positive and adverse effects of biotechnology on the environment. Many have argued that the difference between beneficial biotechnology (e.g. bioremediation is to clean up an oil spill or hazard chemical leak) versus the adverse effects stemming from biotechnological enterprises (e.g. flow of genetic material from transgenic organisms into wild strains) can be seen as applications and implications, respectively.

PaleBlue feels that the cleaning up environmental wastes is an example of an application of environmental biotechnology; whereas loss of biodiversity or loss of containment of a harmful microbe are examples of environmental implications of industrial biotechnology.

Virtual Reality for Biotechnology

Researchers use PaleBlue biotechnology process simulation tools to design new drugs and test reactions in a virtual setting, even before synthesizing it. Our VR biotechnology simulator allows patients to see how the drug works in 3D in front of their eyes instead of just reading long descriptions on the bottle.
