Crew Familiarization

Maritime personnel can now get to know the vessel work area, safety equipment, and HSE routines in a virtual environment on a computer. Crew Familiarization simulator provides a way to visit a vessel, without visiting it.

Using state-of-the-art gaming technology, we make training highly interactive and realistic.

While traditional simulators run on high-end PCs and require server racks of computing power, PaleBlue brings simulators to the consumer PC market.

This makes training more accessible, so more people can learn faster, know procedures better, and operate more effectively.

Seafarers should familiarize themselves with the boat they’ll be working on. But is it best to do this in a traditional way by going around, or is it better, safer and more efficient and do this in a simulator? Students were wearing eye tracking glasses, that record how participants orient themselves. By analyzing this data it is possible to see if there is any difference between the two groups that have had virtual and traditional familiarization.

“We have conducted an experiment onboard Edda Fauna with students from Karmsund Maritime College. Half of the students performed traditional familiarization onboard, while the other half used the simulator. The conclusion is that the two forms of familiarization are equally good”, says Anders Østrem.
